The overarching themes of the Avalon Lab are (1) Discovering Natural Product Neurotherapeutics, (2) Exploring Chemical Ecology in Marine Environments, and (3) Driving Fundamental Scientific Knowledge. The four pillars of the group reflect ways the research is framed: Isolation and Structure Elucidation, Genome Mining, Genetic Engineering, and Host-Microbial Interactions.
Each of these represent emerging areas with opportunities to explore uncharted biochemical space through development of innovative tools for targeted genome mining, omic explorations of marine invertebrate holobiomes, and heterologous expression of cryptic gene clusters with combinatorial biosynthesis.
